Young Carers Service

We are here to support Young Carers aged  5 – 25 across Bridgend.

Young Carers Service Manager

Alissa Bevan

Hello, My name is Alissa and I support the Young Adult Carers. I have had the privilege of working with and supporting the Young Carers in Bridgend since January 2020. I am very passionate about my job role and have recently stepped into the Manager role. Helping to get Young Carers recognized is a vital part of my role to ensure they get the support and help they and are entitled to.

Meet Laura – Young Carers in Education Support Worker

Hi, I’m Laura, the newest member of the Bridgend Carers Centre team. I’m responsible for the Under 13 activities and support a range of young people in schools. As a former young carer, I know that sometimes you just need a break or someone to talk to, and I’m honoured to provide that to our young people.

Young Carers in Schools Project

This project is for young carers aged 5 – 25 and allows us to provide one to one support for young carers inside or outside of school. We provide emotional and practical support to allow young carers to manage their caring role alongside their education. We go in to primary and secondary schools to train staff, support schools to start a young carers group, deliver raising awareness sessions and assemblies and identify young carers champions within the school.

Teen Group

We run a monthly group, funded by Children In Need, at the centre for young carers aged 13 – 17 to have a break from their caring role and meet others in a similar situation as themselves. We offer training and skills workshops, fun activities and trips during the school holidays.

Under 13’s Group

We have been very lucky to secure funding from Principality Building Society for our younger carers aged 5-12 to have respite trips and activities in the school holidays. This gives our younger carers the opportunity to meet other young carers in a similar situation as themselves and gives them the chance to do things they might not be able to do as a family because of their life limiting conditions.

Peer Mentoring

We also run a smaller Peer Mentoring group once a month for Young Carers who are struggling, this helps to build their confidence and encourages them to join the bigger group when they are ready to.
